UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

ARTIST: Sherry Hayne
COUNTRY: U.S.A.
FLAG COLORS: Red, White, Blue
ARTIST’S COMENTS: I’ve been doing family history research and decided to incorporate that into my piece.
My earliest known immigrant ancestor, Anthony “Antony, the Turk” van Salee had a hostile disposition. He was the son of the famed Dutch pirate Jan Janszoon van Haarlem. Of Dutch heritage, Anthony was born in and emigrated from Morocco around 1630. He may have been the first Muslim in the New World.
I selected the U.S.A. to acknowledge and honor my immigrant ancestors. Brass colored discs were engraved with the names of each of my (known) immigrant ancestors. Included is the year of immigration to the U.S. and the country of origin. The discs are arranged in 3 groupings: 17th century (1600’s); 18th century (1700’s); and 19th century 1800’s).
